Introduce the kids to Shakespearian tragedy by making them read Romeo & Juliet? I don't think so! Went to one of our local theatres to see "Titus Andronicus" performed live. Shakespeare is meant as theatre, and therefore, I am big proponent of seeing it PERFORMED. Yes, the language is beautiful, but it is meant to be part of the living, breathing, ever-changing, strange creature that is theatre. I honestly don't think you can truly appreciate Shakespeare as only words on a page.
Also? I am pretty sure that I will never in my life have to explain to somebody that Titus Andronicus is really not a great romance - as I have had to do countless times with Romeo & Juliet. Comments are closed.
